In this Film/Media session, Dr Alec Plowman, Lecturer in Media Production in the School of Art, Media and American Studies at University of East Anglia, will run an interactive skills and insight workshop for students on The Filmmaker’s Toolkit.

You want to make movies?

Awesome. But where do you start?

These days, the range of tools at our disposal is incredible, but also completely overwhelming.

You can shoot your film on anything from a consumer grade iPhone to an industry leading cine camera. You can edit it in a pro-spec edit suite, or using a tablet on your sofa at home. And the ever-growing range of generative AI tools is fundamentally changing the way we think about filmmaking in the first place.

So what do you actually need in your toolkit? How do you see the wood for the trees? As we’ll explore in The Filmmaker’s Toolkit, gear is not everything. By understanding film storytelling, the principles of collaboration and the equipment you are using – be it iPhone or cine camera – you can tell stories that resonate with viewers and find an audience.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Film/Media and related disciplines.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the topic in advance, with respect to challenges they may face or questions they have. Students can also think about questions they have about studying at university level.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Zoom and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard.
